Gotheborg incorrectly lists this mark as Takahashi. The reason for that is due to the fact that San Francisco based importer Takahashi Imports sold many Dai Ichi Toki wares, along with numerous other makers with Takahashi branded stickers on the base.

Ryu-ho is a house brand of porcelain manufacturer Sanyo Toki, based in Gifu, Japan.
It is a modern, late 20th century mark.
The mark simply says Ryu-ho, 龍峰, and nothing more.
In English it means Dragon Peak.

That's a Chinese Ming period mark, however, that does not mean it's actually from Ming era.

DeleteGenerally, the entire piece needs to be seen in order to make that determination, although Yasuda company was active during the late Meiji through Taisho years.

Unfortunately I'm unable to see the first character. It's too blurry and illegible for me to make out. The second character is 窯 for Gama, the Japanese word for kiln

What an informative site, thanks. I have a small ceramic vase with lid bought in a store in Hong Kong in 1972. I always thought it was Chinese but the mark seems otherwise as it has the cross in the circle at the top.
ReplyDeleteAfter that in order, but I only know Mandarin hanzi: lin for forest, shi for market and shan for mountain. Does that mean anything?
The gold paint is still very good as well as the flowers and birds but the crackling has worsened and the vase darkened because of oil I put in it years ago but I love it.
I now see that my mark on my little vase would be said ' hayashi shi zan'.

These sound like Kutani style Japanese porcelain - popular as souvenirs for WWII GIs to take home. Similar ones are for sale online at eBay or Etsy. Bysons Buttons website usually carries quite a few.

The circle with cross is Shimazu crest and is associated with Satsuma, this appears to be 20th century satsuma of some sort, can't tell without photo of item.

Appears to be Sumida pottery from Japan. Sumida Gawa is the most famous of makers of this type ware.

Hello, I sincerely hope your health issues have continued to improve. I hope you can help me as I have logged many hours searching for information on this ceramic with silver overlay vase regarding the kiln/artist/history. I went to Gotheborg and found it useless. I was told the vase came from Asahikawa, Hokkaido and was brought home by a soldier in 1945. If you are not able to help me perhaps you would be so kind to suggest additional sources that may be of assistance, I love research and have bookmarked your site. I have an oval platter 60"x12". It is white porcelain with a blue rim 1-5/8" that depics pagodas, weeping willow trees, birds, sail boats, and people standing on bridges. It is signed Royal Sometula (it is hard to read); and underneath is says NIPPON. Can you tell me anything about it, i.e., year it was made, value, etc. I can send a picture if you like.

When my aunt passed away in 2001, I went to Upstate New York to help prepare her belongings for an estate sale. I found these, and other, teacups and saucers in a box in her barn. ReplyDeleteI have a vase that says on the bottom Satsuma it is in mint condition gold Japanese with raised paint the inside has a crackled look it's old hand painted with handles and a scean of ppl playing music, I just don't know the era it is from I wish I could take a pic but I don't see how to here, It's 12 inches high ! ReplyDeleteA lot of stuff is marked Japan in under glaze blue, most from 1900-1930's. After that the "Made in" was required. The Blue Willow stuff from Japan usually dates to the 20's to 30's. I still use some of mine.

DeleteWell it is a Kutani piece, that I am pretty certain. A very high quality piece has to be from a well listed artist. I'd estimate it was 1880-1900 Meiji piece. Try Gbouvier.com Kutani virtual library under the potters marks section.

I have a piece of Nippon that has what looks sort of like a kagome crest but is circular in the middle with 6 points ( forming a star if you will) coming out of the circle around the outside edge of the circle.
ReplyDeleteOn this piece there also are symbols ( wording I guess) that are diamond shaped with a long mark down the middle of the diamond from top to bottom with 6 short marks coming from the long middle one, 3 on each side of the long middle one.
These diamonds also have a type of 2 sided finials ( flare outs if you will ) at each end with a dot over each finial/ flare.
I have NO idea how to " write" it here, hope I explained this allright and hope you can give me some ideas as to what those symbols mean .

I meant to add, those symbols are on the FRONT of the piece, it also has a flower design on the front.

Are you able to identify the above marks for me? Set of 8- 1 lid missing. There is an embossed circle with dot in centre on base of bowl or cup and saucer, as well as an embosse " m' " under red glaze, as well as two stamps inside each bowl. The china is transelucent, but densely so.

I believe the golden marks in the middle mean Kutani and the bottom red mark means "made by" but I can't find the meaning of the top left red mark.

I have a beautiful bowl, very heavy, painted on both sides with picture of three adult females and one child showing a picture of Japanese characters and gold paint, and showing a bridge and parasol held by one of the ladies (looks a bit like cloissone, which makes me wonder if the bowl is metal). The mark on the base in red shows exactly the mark on this website for Ming Zhi Meiji period, plus two separate marks one in blue offset box which is like a ring with floral top and another red box containing a mark that looks like a "u" or a "c" depending on what angle you look at it from. I have no idea whether this is fake because there is a more modern label attached saying do not use for fruit as fruit could be poisoned. What have I got here?

I have few questions:
ReplyDelete1. Why is it that 10 inch vase in moriage style may range from $250 to $7,500? How one knows which one is worth $250 and which one is worth $7,000? What is the difference?
2. Does it make any difference in value, if the vase has only the mark of the distributor, the Suzuki Company? (Meaning it is from late 1920)
3. Why do I find either Satsuma or Moriage style ... can it be Satsuma Moriage style?
4. Does it make any difference in value if when you knock upon the vase and it produces no sound or dull sound?
5. Can a gilded (with gold) vase in brown - blue - green - orange - gold hand painted have any value? On what does its value depend?
6. What does Taisho period mean?

Do you recognize this mark? It is on a piece of lustreware. The oly thing I can find is on a Noritake collector site that lists it as 'not Noritake' and 'possibly Sumidagawa.
