I have a piece of porcelain with this mark 開造祥瑞五良太夫製之
ReplyDeletePossibly 18/19th c, does the mark seem familiar ?
Thanks,
Vic
That's a Chinese Ming period mark, however, that does not mean it's actually from Ming era.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for more information about this
ReplyDeletehttp://imgur.com/MLPL8cr
is it mino yaki
Yes, it's Minoyaki. The mark is 三峰 , Mitsumine
DeleteHow can I copy a mark here from a piece of porcelain?
ReplyDeleteTake a photo of the mark and upload it to somewhere like Flickr or photo image hosting site and then paste the link in comment and I'll take a look at it for you
DeleteThank you, I have uploaded a photo to my web site. www.robertljarvisimages.zenfolio.com. On the opening page scroll down, there is a folder titled Porcelain mark, it is there.
DeleteI would be grateful for any information regarding this mark. It is on a hand painted porcelain tea set featuring flying mallard duck. I think it was probably made in the early 20th century for the tourist trade.
Your mark says 安田造 , Yasuda Zo, Made by Yasuda.
DeleteMay I save your image and add it to my list?
Please do. Can you tell me anything more for example the period the marking was used in?
DeleteGenerally, the entire piece needs to be seen in order to make that determination, although Yasuda company was active during the late Meiji through Taisho years.
DeleteHello, I have a pair of vases with the mark 美山 (reading possibly miyama?) preceded by the cross in circle. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteYes, you have the correct name. The cross in circle is the Shimazu clan Mon which means your piece is Satsuma
DeleteThank you for sharing your website and knowledge. I have been looking for information on this mark. Is it one you are familiar with? Thank you regardless.
ReplyDeletehttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah63/rb113/SUNP00531_zpseae978b0.jpg
Unfortunately I'm unable to see the first character. It's too blurry and illegible for me to make out. The second character is 窯 for Gama, the Japanese word for kiln
DeleteHi, do you know anything about Yamaka from Hizen (you show their mark here), I could not find anything about them...

Thank you so much for such an interesting and informative blog - I didn't know my Fuku from my Kutani but now I am getting there - but in all seriousness it is a wonderful blog and has given me a new interest in trying to find out about a Japanese or Chinese bowl I have - maybe i will send you some pictures in time. In the meanwhile thanks again and keep up this wonderful blog - Gary - London
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me more about a dish if I sent you a picture of it
ReplyDeleteI have a porcelain tea set with the rising sun in brown, machine printed. Also the two Japanese characters for Nippon plus "HANDGEMELT". The German for hand made. ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me what does the RT in "大日本 RT" mean? This is a mark in red colour at the bottom of a pot. Thanks a lot in advance.
I have a mark I have no clue what it says or is? Anyone know? BTW great info on this blog! Well done!!!! I don't know how to upload a pic? It is on a piece of earthenware prob Japanese? 2 characters one looks like a pitch fork with a line at the middle and bottom the other looks like a walking 3 part armadillo with a curved tongue sticking out ???
ReplyDeleteWould you know which kiln this might be from? Thank you.
ReplyDeletehttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww257/fr011/0505151520_zpsfnynrnjq.jpg
What an informative site, thanks. I have a small ceramic vase with lid bought in a store in Hong Kong in 1972. I always thought it was Chinese but the mark seems otherwise as it has the cross in the circle at the top.
ReplyDeleteAfter that in order, but I only know Mandarin hanzi: lin for forest, shi for market and shan for mountain. Does that mean anything?
The gold paint is still very good as well as the flowers and birds but the crackling has worsened and the vase darkened because of oil I put in it years ago but I love it.
I now see that my mark on my little vase would be said ' hayashi shi zan'.
ReplyDeleteAs it begins with the Shimazu clan Mon mark is it Satsuma ware?
appreciate any help....
I have a mark i want to know more about. May i email it to you?
ReplyDeleteOops - by the way it's on a Kutani porcelain sleeping cat - a very nicely done one.
ReplyDeleteDo you know the full translation of the following mark, I only have a partial which I cannot have dated
ReplyDeleteMark: Yamashita tsukuri, meaning "Hill Foot Made"
http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/bild/692_fullsize.jpg
I am at a loss to decipher this mark, I lack the knowledge and your website is the best I've found so I'm inspired but still clueless. I believe this to be a Showa period vase, can you help me or advise a source for further research? Thanks in advance.

ReplyDeleteLita,
ReplyDeleteI have a box of china buttons molded in the shape of rose blooms. The box they're in is marked:
"Aitosha Co., Yuzan China, Osaka, Japan." They were brought back by my father when in Osaka, Japan in 1950 recuperating after having been wounded in action in Korea. If you can tell me anything about them, I would appreciate it:
Gene Robinson, e-mail: heissen_sie@yahoo.com
These sound like Kutani style Japanese porcelain - popular as souvenirs for WWII GIs to take home. Similar ones are for sale online at eBay or Etsy. Bysons Buttons website usually carries quite a few.
DeleteCould you help me identify this. It would much appreciated.

ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and informative site, intriguing.
I realise you must be inundated with requests, but I wonder if you are able to throw any light on a tea set that I have. It's some years old, I think it's porcelain, quite thin and light, but I cannot decipher what the marks mean on the base. I have been through all the examples here, but cannot see anything similar. I do hope you can help.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful website which helps me a lot for identifying my Japanese antiques.
Could you please help me to recognize the time of one of my Satsuma dragon vase? I have been through all the marks in your website, but I can't find the exact one.

Thank you!
Tina
Hello, I sincerely hope your health issues have continued to improve. I hope you can help me as I have logged many hours searching for information on this ceramic with silver overlay vase regarding the kiln/artist/history. I went to Gotheborg and found it useless. I was told the vase came from Asahikawa, Hokkaido and was brought home by a soldier in 1945. If you are not able to help me perhaps you would be so kind to suggest additional sources that may be of assistance, I love research and have bookmarked your site. Thank you in advance and I envy you your astute and extensive knowledge, thank you for sharing.

Found your blogspot while looking online for help deciphering the marks at the bottoms of two teacups and saucers. When my aunt passed away in 2001, I went to Upstate New York to help prepare her belongings for an estate sale. I found these, and other, teacups and saucers in a box in her barn. These two were the only ones in the box with Oriental styling. Photos can be viewed at https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B11TjQ7qAeDpb0xxWUI2dGlCNW8/edit. I can be contacted at ellriss@yahoo.com. Thank you, in advance, for any help you can provide.

ReplyDeleteA lot of stuff is marked Japan in under glaze blue, most from 1900-1930's. After that the "Made in" was required. The Blue Willow stuff from Japan usually dates to the 20's to 30's. I still use some of mine.
DeleteHello Lita, very nice blog site. More informative than the Gotheborg site for Japanese marks. I bought some Japanese Saki Cups and was wondering if anyone recognizes the mark. I don't think they are old. I just think the quality is very high and was wondering if this is a studio somewhere that sells this. Here is photo of the mark. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/~MIAAOSwnipWUEZ9/s-l1600.jpg

Hi, it is Chinese 20th C mark.
DeleteI purchased a tea set at auction and would like to know more about it. I don't know how to submit a picture so if you can assist please let me know.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I am reading, it looks like the only way to share a photo on this site is if a flickr account is created. I don't understand this program and do not want all my photos uploaded for the world. How can I get one photo so I can find out more about the tea set I have?
Deletejust send the link from that photo only from your flickr or pinterest or whatever online photo storage, all they can see is that one.
DeleteThank you for your informative site.
ReplyDeleteI purchased a pair of these vases years ago and am seeking to identify the maker but have not been successful. Hoping you might be of assistance. Posted images of the mark and views of the decoration.

DeleteWell it is a Kutani piece, that I am pretty certain. A very high quality piece has to be from a well listed artist. I'd estimate it was 1880-1900 Meiji piece. Try Gbouvier.com Kutani virtual library under the potters marks section.
ReplyDeleteI have received some porcelain and pottery items from my mother-in-law.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about them. Here are their marks:

Here's the link to a picture that I took:

I have a piece of Nippon that has what looks sort of like a kagome crest but is circular in the middle with 6 points ( forming a star if you will) coming out of the circle around the outside edge of the circle.
ReplyDeleteOn this piece there also are symbols ( wording I guess) that are diamond shaped with a long mark down the middle of the diamond from top to bottom with 6 short marks coming from the long middle one, 3 on each side of the long middle one.
These diamonds also have a type of 2 sided finials ( flare outs if you will ) at each end with a dot over each finial/ flare.
I have NO idea how to " write" it here, hope I explained this allright and hope you can give me some ideas as to what those symbols mean .
Thank you !
I meant to add, those symbols are on the FRONT of the piece, it also has a flower design on the front.
ReplyDeleteThe back has the wordking hand painted Nippon with the wreath and the M mark in the middle of the wreath .
This site is awesome, I am really enjoying it !
I have been collecting inexpensive miniature Japanese vases, bowls, etc. by an artist whose works were sold by Morimoto-Toen as Micros for tourists, by Fukagawa Arita as small vases OR-132, and finally, I bought quite a few from Fitz& Floyd salesman. Do you know who the artist was? How do I send you a copy of his signature?
ReplyDeleteCould you please be so kind as to interpret the mark on this image for me? https://goo.gl/photos/ZvutjTbjy3ibYdNn9

Are you able to identify the above marks for me? Set of 8- 1 lid missing. There is an embossed circle with dot in centre on base of bowl or cup and saucer, as well as an embosse " m' " under red glaze, as well as two stamps inside each bowl. The china is transelucent, but densely so.

Hello i have this beautiful plate i purchased and was told it is Marumi Gama Kinsei - マル美窯謹製
ReplyDelete( Humbly made at Round Beauty Kiln ) but no place does it say the year
I have a beautiful bowl, very heavy, painted on both sides with picture of three adult females and one child showing a picture of Japanese characters and gold paint, and showing a bridge and parasol held by one of the ladies (looks a bit like cloissone, which makes me wonder if the bowl is metal). The mark on the base in red shows exactly the mark on this website for Ming Zhi Meiji period, plus two separate marks one in blue offset box which is like a ring with floral top and another red box containing a mark that looks like a "u" or a "c" depending on what angle you look at it from. I have no idea whether this is fake because there is a more modern label attached saying do not use for fruit as fruit could be poisoned. What have I got here?

I have few questions:
ReplyDelete1. Why is it that 10 inch vase in moriage style may range from $250 to $7,500? How one knows which one is worth $250 and which one is worth $7,000? What is the difference?
2. Does it make any difference in value, if the vase has only the mark of the distributor, the Suzuki Company? (Meaning it is from late 1920)
3. Why do I find either Satsuma or Moriage style ... can it be Satsuma Moriage style?
4. Does it make any difference in value if when you knock upon the vase and it produces no sound or dull sound?
5. Can a gilded (with gold) vase in brown - blue - green - orange - gold hand painted have any value? On what does its value depend?
6. What does Taisho period mean?
